The 40 Year Old Bat Mitzvah

Age: It’s Just a State of Mind

I am chairing our synagogue’s Nominating Committee, which means I track people down and try to talk them into serving on our Board of Directors.

I had a hot lead so I called him to see if he is interested.

As we spoke, I learned that he is almost 83 years old, and his main reservation about serving on the board is the fact that he works full-time so he’s concerned that he’ll be too busy.

He also is studying weekly with Dr Reiss, who teaches various adult ed classes at B’nai Chaim, in preparation for his May bar mitzvah, when he will commemorate the 70th anniversary of his original boyhood bar mitzvah.

Kind of gives you a new perspective on aging, doesn’t it? If there is such a thing as an aging role model, truly Mel S. is mine.
