we do not install the muzezah like a nagar’. According to Rashi this means we do not put the muzezah up in a prone position. According to Rabainu Tam this means we don’t put the muzezah up straight. The Shulchan Aruch poskins that we put straight up and down. The Rema (who adds the Ashkanezi customs to the Shulchan Aruch) poskins that we put them up on a slant in order to fulfill both opinions. Practically speaking, if you follow S’faradi minhagim (customs), put your mezuzos straight up and down. If you follow Ashkanez minhagim (customs), tilt the top of the muzezah towards the room that you are entering. If you are part of the small group of people who follow the customs of the Vilna Goan, put your mezuzos straight up and down like the S’faradim.
