The 40 Year Old Bat Mitzvah

Adult B’nai Mitzvah Requirements

Programs vary.  My yearlong adult b’nai mitzvah program at Temple Adat Shalom (Poway) has these requirements:

  • competency to fluently read biblical Hebrew (intensive study & private tutoring required for students who aren’t up to speed when the course begins – i.e. all of us) – required by June
  • attend group class taught by Rabbi David Castiglione and Cantor Lori Frank scheduled twice or more monthly
  • attend adult learning lectures and programs at Temple Adat Shalom as recommended by the curriculum (so far we have attended an Outreach Program lecture on perspectives of Jews by choice and a series of lectures on the Abrahamic Faiths (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity) by UC San Diego Professor Khaleel Mohamed (whom regular readers of my other blog will know as the Professor from Guyana.)
  • Read two texts:  Introduction to Judaism:  A Sourcebook (Revised) by Stephen Einstein and Lydia Kukoff, and Jewish Literacy by Joseph Telushkin
  • Subscribe to and read daily Ten Minutes of Torah
  • Keep a spiritual journal
  • Choose a Jewish book to read and write a brief reflection (suggestions are at The URJ’s site.)
  • Tzedakah project

We will present the book report and tzedakah project to the class in June.  Over the summer, we will work on our Torah and Haftorah portions.  In December, our class will lead a Saturday morning Torah service.

I am going to become a bat mitzvah on November 15th, 2015 when I become 68 years old. I need this much time to prepare, but I plan on being successful. Judi Marlin
